- If its the earlier version I replaced the evil 6006e on my 2001 Y-reg Focus Ghia with another evil 6006e from a 2002 Mondeo on a 52-reg, got fed up with it when it turned bad on me. Out it came and the single 6000 Cd went in along with a connect2 for ipod connectivity. Brill could flick through the tracks via the controls up at the wheel.

I am thinking of getting one of these to replace the head unit in our 03 Focus. But before I do, does anyone no whether or not these units can support MP3?
Wednesday 19th December 2007
I don't know but do yourself a favour and don't get one. They are really badly designed and it only takes a small difference from the ideal cd size spec and the mechanism gets confused and jams. This happens with pretty much any CDR (presumably you'll be wanting to write mp3s to a CDR?) and the odd real cd. The unit seams to fail to grab the cds and then loses it and then it's jammed. Fixing it requires taking the unit out, removing the lid, retrieving the now scratched cd and putting it on the pile on ones you can no longer play in the car (don't forget you can't even copy it and use a CDR because all CDRs we've tried jam the unit. I've taken the one apart in the wife's mondeo 3 times since we bought the car in the summer.
I'd test the mp3 bit for you but I know it would jam and then the wife would moan and then I'd have to take it to bits again and then I'd be tempted to smash the fecking thing to pieces again and every time the temptation gets stronger

Thanks for your help. I don't think that the Ford unit of this era play MP3's. We have a 6000CD and this evening I ripped one of my CD's to MP3 and tried it out. What I got was strange though. It only saw the MP3's as one track, and the display read CD ROM. No sound, but the counter was going and you could hear the CD spinning round.
Bearing in mind what you said earlier, I think I might go for a CD Changer.

It's a shame because as a self-contained unit it's a damn good idea as you don't have to house a changer. Have a search on google and see if the problems are widespread but I read of a few other people having the same problems so I reckon you'd be better off with a different unit and buying an adapter to make the ford stalk remote work with it.Ford Cd 6006e Manual Download
Your other option (which is what the wife is doing with hers) is to spend the money on an ipod and an itrip and you can keep what you have, gain an ipod and gain the ability to play mp3s. However, the sound quality isn't great to be perfectly honest. If you care at all about sound quality then it'll annoy you to a degree but if you're not massively fussy it's an option. If you're lucky enough to have a line in on the back of your current unit then you could feed the ipod in to that. Yet another alternative is that you could, instead of buying a head unit and changer, get a head unit which is compatible with an ipod. In that way you can effectively control the ipod through the head unit just like you would with the changer but for 170 quid you could get an 80Gb ipod with a lot more room on it than you'd get with 6 cds worth of mp3. Don't know any specific models as decided not to bother with the wife's car as she doesn't drive that far so google is the way to go.
Good luck.

I have just bought a Mondeo with this wonderful unit. Could somebody tell me how to remove the stereo from the fascia, there are 5 CDs in the stereo left by the previous owner (wonder what they are?).
I have tried to use thin electrical screwdrivers in each of the four slots on the side of the unit without success - is there a special technique, or do I need to buy a tool?
Thanks for your help

Thanks Dern, have tried your tip but it still wont budge. Anybody get any other suggestions?

When you stick the screwdrivers in or the coathanger tool you're trying to push a spring towards the headunit. The proper tool uses a thicker guage wire than a coat hanger so when you insert the coat hanger tool the bit that goes in the hole will be pushed away from the headunit and the bit nearest to you will be pushed towards the headunit if you see what I mean. So, insert the two u-shaped bits of coat hanger wire and then push the bits sticking out towards you away from each other (the left one to the left and the right to the right). This will push the springs in towards the head unit and hopefully release it. So.. insert your homemade tools, push the headunit in to the dash a bit, pull the tools gently apart (as described above) and then pull the headunit out. Don't use excessive force though as you may break the plastic around the holes in the head unit. If it doesn't come out easily then just get the proper tools from halfords or off ebay.

I think the slightly newer shinier Sony branded one plays MP3s, but it doesn't fit in the same slot.
I had a perfectly working 6006e that I sold on ebay, but by the time Royal Mail had had their game of parcel football it was broken so I had to give the guy a refund. Never had any trouble loading it up with CDRs though in the short time I had it.
I've put one of these in my car now [url]ebay fascia|http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-FIESTA-FOCUS-MONDEO-COUGAR-STEREO-FACIA-FASCIA_W0QQitemZ140214753362QQihZ004QQcategoryZ108815QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks Dern - I took the Halfords route and extracted the unit successfully.
5 CDs were Readers Digest Sixties Selection and Best Country & Western hits so had no qualms in pulling these out in any way.
Unit still shows error E3 so will make do with radio (despite poor MW reception) and for music use MP3 transmitted to FM.
May try and track down a replacement non-6006E unit, but would want a replacement to fit existing aperture and use steering wheel remote. I would imagine that the slightly higher spec 9006 suffers in the same way as the 6006E - am I right? any other options?
Thanks to all for your advice

Funny as I've never had any problems with the 6006E in my ST170, and the 6006E in my old TDCi Sport only faltered after playing a CD-R.
Those of you who experience 'jams', have you tried pressing the Load and Eject buttons at the same time ? That should clear the unit.

I have a 1.6 X Reg Fiesta Ghia with the 6006E changer. This jammed after 3 years with a CD-R with a paper label and somehow it managed to eject the disk a few months later. I then made the same mistake again last week and put an unlabelled CD-R in it. It made some harsh spinning noises and refused to play or eject. I bought the removal tools from Halfords and tried to pull the 6006E unit out but it seemed to be held in by something, perhaps the heater controls below it. After lots of pulling and pushing in vain it did seem to come free on one side and move out a little and at the same time the disks started to eject. So now I have the unit working again but the removal tools are stuck in it and I can't pull the unit out to release them. Has anyone any ideas what is stopping it sliding out or how I can get the removal tools out?

I've had this on my unit lately when it has failed to load a CD. After 5 years of working perfectly it eventually gave up the ghost. If you have all the discs out then by disconnecting the power supply and reconnecting it the unit should reset itself and the error disappear. If not then open up the unit and manually move the CD tray by turning the plastic spindles that move the tray up and down. Then power it up again and it will force a reset. Job should be a good un.
However, i bought an iPod and an FM transmitter instead. Much better option.

I've got one of these in my Focus. It's never jammed a CD (yet), but more often than not it refuses to play them and almost never with a CDR. It's a bit variable though - I think it improves with use!
I'd probably just stick a regular single CD unit with MP3 capability in there.
I believe Podie had one for sale a while back. Was thinking of buying it myself before I got distracted by other issues on the car! Maybe he'd be worth a PM?

hi andy, its really a case of wiggiling it side to side, the tools have a very slight hook to them, to push the retaining clips away from the stereo, have a cuppa and go back with a fresh head and just push the pins towards each other and pull, as to taking it apart never done it, sold my pile of poo poo on ebay for quite a good price aswell and replaced with a jvc headunit that works when i want it to

Bump for a quick question.
I have a Mk3 Mondeo with the prefacelift dash and Ford 6006cd player, but it doesn't have an aux jack for an iPod, etc. Would one of these Sony 6CD players fit in as a straight swap? IMO they're a hell of a lot smarter.

I had a 6006E fitted im a Mk2 Zetec. I had no problems with the loading or unloading of disks, but one thing i hated was the sound quality, it was rubbish. I think its because there is an output for a bass box (that is found in the ST170 i am told) I got rid of the unit sharpish and bought a statdard 6000 = much better.
